Latest wearable models point to further shift towards personal healthcare

Latest smartwatch and fitness tracker models show further shift towards personal healthcare 👇.

As previous models came to market, we saw investment in stress monitoring with a separate EDA stress sensor by certain brands such as Fitbit and Samsung. In addition to measuring saturation (SpO2) through the Corona epidemic.

Now we mainly see development in the area of monitoring (skin) temperatuur🌡️.

Apple, Fitbit and Samsung have all added temperature sensors to their latest models. This opens up possibilities towards monitoring menstrual cycles (Apple) or early detection of fever (still in the future).

Garmin remains one of the larger smartwatch vendors. Using their Firstbeat Analytics algorithms, they are one of the better ones around stress and recovery monitoring. For now, their focus remains mainly on sports and performance monitoring and less on personal healthcare.

Many developments are also taking place outside hardware. For example, Fitbit has developed an ECG app to take ECG and detect atrial fibrillation. For the algorithm, Fitbit has received FDA approval.

A US start-up has received FDA approval for an app that can recognise tremors and other symptoms in patients with parkinson's disease based on the Apple Watch.

Especially in this area, I expect many and much faster developments. Whereby the ever-improving hardware of the major wearable vendors will be used for specific medical applications and target groups, bringing innovative digital care within reach of large groups of people even faster.
